Staying in self catering accommodation gives you the maximum amount of flexibility. You can get up late and have a late breakfast or get out early and see the sun rising over the Lakes. The choice is yours. There are plenty of eating places to cater for most tastes in all the major towns in the area so you don’t even need to cook for yourself.

Shipwrecks of Lake Superior
Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake in the world, has also got another gory claim to fame. Due to the tempestuous climate and the frequent storms in the Great Lakes region it is also known as the “Graveyard of the Great Lakes”.

There are many reasons behind this unusual phenomenon. The lake’s large size creates a kind of maritime climate around, thereby keeping the temperatures lower than regions at this level normally have. The water reacts slowly to changes in temperature and hence there is a “lake effect snow” in the winter and also fog and moisture in the air.

However, it is the annual storms around this lake which are the cause of the shipwrecks. The average waves during storms could rise to the height of 20m and have also been known to reach the height of 30m occasionally. These can cause ships to crash and collide, and due to the low temperatures, the ship wrecks are preserved at the bottom of the lake in excellent condition. In 1905 and 1913, the storms created multiple shipwrecks leading to many lives being lost.

Nowadays, there are Shipwreck Tours of Lake Superior, since most of these shipwrecks are in very well-preserved condition. There are glass bottomed boats which traverse the lake and you can get a good view of many of these beautiful ships and get a good look at the havoc that nature can cause.

There is a legend that “Lake Superior seldom gives up her dead”. This is a result of the fact that the cold temperatures of the lake water inhibit bacterial growth. Bacteria are what feed on bodies and build gas in them, making them rise to the surface. All these natural phenomenon only add to the fables built around this magnificent lake and add to the mystery within it’s depths.

Lake Superior Circle Tour
Lake Superior is such a large lake that it shows different facets of it’s beauty to different people. It is rugged and hard in some areas, it has cobblestone beaches in other parts. There are some places where the spectacular waterfalls will astound you with their beauty and in other areas there are quiet rivers flowing serenely into the lake. If you stood at the shoreline at Duluth in Minnesota and watched the roaring waves hit the shoreline, you will forget that right behind you there is a large city.

The best way to truly experience the majesty of Lake Superior is by driving around the Lake Superior Circle Tour. The highway around this lovely lake is about 1300 miles long and it traverses vistas which are as varied as they are beautiful.

This Circle Tour will take you through three American States – Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan and also through Canada’s province Ontario. You can also travel around the lake by boat and ferry. It has been divided into five travel regions, each distinct in it’s characteristics and ambience. Take your time to go through all of them, take a few days or a few years, you will always want to keep coming back for more.

Among the many attractions of this place we have native arts and cultural activities, camping sites and parks, walking trails, snowmobile trails and ice-climbing cliffs. The Circle Tour has something for everyone and you can be as busy or as relaxed as you want.

Everyone has their favourite season on when to travel around Lake Superior, but she is at her prettiest during the Fall. The fall colours of russet, red and orange and brown are present in their full glory and the air is clean and fresh.

Lake Superior is not only a unique place, but it is also amazingly beautiful and serene in places, and stunningly wild in others.

Lake Superior : the world’s largest freshwater lake

Surrounded in the north by the province of Ontario in Canada and the US states of Minnesota and Michigan and Wisconsin on the other sides, Lake Superior was officially discovered in the 17th century by French Explorers. Henry Wordsworth Longfellow wrote about it in his poetry and Gordon Lightfoot sang about it in his song.

This unusual lake has over 200 rivers which empty their waters into it, and it is also the coldest lake among the Great lakes. The storms of this lake can give rise to wave’s over20m in height, and many of them are responsible for the innumerable shipwrecks which have taken place here. The southern shore of this great lake has been known as the “Graveyard of the Great Lakes “. Many of these shipwrecks are now preserved and have become something of a tourist attraction.

Most of the towns which border this lake are old mining and shipping centres. Tourism is now one of their major money spinners, but earlier their main commerce sectors were fur trading and fishing and mining.

The rugged countryside of Lake Superior, specially on the Canadian side and around Wisconsin, has become very popular with adventure seeking tourists. There are many parks and trails and there are regions where walks and camping sites abound.

The best way to see and travel around Lake Superior and the other great lakes is by taking the Great Lakes Circle Tour. This is a scenic road transport system and covers over 15,000 kilometres. It traverses around the shores of all the lakes and it is the closest highway to the water.

Lake Superior is also a fisherman’s paradise. There are over 80 species of fish available here, but overfishing has led to a decline in the fish population. Efforts are being made to increase the number of fish and also to renew the nutrients in the Lake.
